When I was younger and guiding in Southeast Alaska, I always made sure my fly box was stocked with plenty of flesh flies. I carried several variations in different sizes and colors, but this specific pattern was the top producer most days. It accounted for piles of Dolly Varden, rainbow trout, and sea-run cutthroat—while pink and coho salmon would eat it too. Simple to tie, versatile, and best of all, it works. Watch the tying demo below to learn how to tie it. 👇
Best Fishing Methods
1️⃣ Dead-Drift It (The Go-To Method)
The dead drift is king. You don’t need an indicator to fish this fly, as most takes are rarely subtle. This approach lets you efficiently cover water while also picking apart seams and pockets with precision, making sure you don’t leave fish behind.
Double-Fly Rig (Steak & Eggs)
Setup:
- Flesh fly as the lead
- Egg pattern as the dropper
This rig perfectly imitates what’s happening in the river—eggs and flesh drifting together. For this setup, I use an indicator, and it’s my preferred method overall.
If you want to be tactical and methodical through every riffle and run, the steak-and-eggs rig is the ticket. Simply tie an egg pattern below your Flesh Wound streamer, and your net is going to get a workout. This setup can dramatically increase catch rates while sharpening your drift control and presentation.
Focus your casts between and behind spawning salmon to reduce fouling and place the rig where natural flesh and eggs are actually drifting. This can be surprisingly challenging on coastal streams packed with salmon, but don’t let the sheer number of fish distract you from good technique. The biggest fish still demand precision, patience, and focus.
2️⃣ Swing It (Deadly for Big Fish)
Often overlooked—but incredibly effective.
How:
- Cast slightly upstream
- Let the fly sink
- Allow it to swing across the current until it’s nearly straight below you
🔥 Pro move: Add a small twitch at the end of the swing. This subtle movement can trigger savage strikes from large rainbows and char.
