I’ve just kicked off my new fly-box rebuild series, and I’m excited to share Episode 1 with you. In this installment, I dive into adding some fresh, small-scale patterns — mini leeches — to my trout fly box. The tying process was a lot of fun and offered a nice change of pace from my usual larger bass patterns.
Why focus on mini leeches?
🔹 I wanted to refresh the trout selection in my box with something different and effective.
🔹 Tying smaller flies challenges me in a good way — finer detail, tighter proportions, more focus.
🔹 I wanted to bring new patterns into the mix that perform well but still tie up quickly.
What happened in the video
In the YouTube video, I walk you through:
🔹 Selecting materials for the mini leeches (slender profile, subtle movement)
🔹 Highlighting the multipurpose, versatile hook used
🔹 Sharing my thoughts on where I’ll fish them
Final thoughts
Tying smaller flies was a refreshing change, and these mini leeches fit perfectly into my trout box rebuild strategy. Whether you’re updating your own fly box or just looking for a new pattern to tie, these flies are worth exploring.
