San Woolly Wet Fly and Red UV Midge, two effective trout patterns tied by Matt Campbell.

Trout Fly Box Rebuild Episode 3: The San Woolly Wet Fly & Red UV Midge 🪶

In this episode of my Trout Fly Box Rebuild, I tie two patterns that consistently earn their place in my fly box: the San Woolly Wet Fly and the Red UV Midge. Both are simple, effective, and reliable under a variety of conditions.

🪱 San Woolly Wet Fly

This fly sits right between a classic woolly worm and a traditional wet fly. It’s easy to tie, fishes well in both moving and still water, and works as a solid searching pattern. I built this one by blending my carp-fly style with the movement and profile of a woolly worm. Swing it, drift it, or slow-strip it — it produces in a lot of situations.

🔴 Red UV Midge

Sometimes you have to go small, and ignoring midges will cost you fish. Midges are a primary food source for trout year-round, especially in colder months when other insects are limited. Trout feed heavily on drifting larvae and emerging pupae, making midges one of the most consistent producing and important patterns to carry.

The Red UV Midge keeps things simple and effective. It has a clean profile with just enough UV to stand out without looking unnatural. It’s a go-to pattern when the water is clear, the fish are pressured, and subtlety matters.
